As a new graduate of Huddersfield university, 2016 was an unforgettable year for me.
I first met the W’innovate team at New Designers and was thrilled to be offered their graduate contract as an Assistant Surface Pattern & Print Designer. I also travelled to Shanghai as the UK representative in the Society of Dyers & Colourists International Design Competition and won the global title for 2016.
W’innovate offers graduates the opportunity to hit the ground running and fully contribute within a commercial studio full of likeminded and supportive colleagues offering a wide range of experiences which is invaluable at the very beginning of a career in design.
I am now a permanent member of the team as a Junior Surface Pattern & Print Designer. I manage the cushion, throw and wallpaper categories, working alongside the buyers to research and develop a wide variety of seasonal ranges and a recent visit to suppliers in the Far East provided a valuable insight into manufacturing processes. This role allows me to design across multiple categories, drawing and painting in different styles and making full use of Adobe and AVA software to develop a versatile and commercial handwriting.
I really enjoy working for W’innovate and anticipate many more new and exciting projects. Future plans involve a collaborative project with Huddersfield University Textile Department and mentoring placement students. Of course, I am really looking forward to seeing my first ranges launch in store for Spring 2018.
